Snow!!

Now that winter is practically over, I finally got a day in the snow. I missed the big storm a few weeks ago, but got up to the Boston area just in time for a snowy hike last Monday, before rain and warm weather melted it all. This is at Blue Hills Reservation, about 20 minutes from my parents house. Back when Chewie and I were both younger, we used to hike here at least once week. This particular trail is fairly easy, with very little gain in elevation, and only about a mile from the parking lot is this small pond, really just a big puddle, but its pretty.

A rare picture of me! With Chewie and Panzer.
Chewie is getting old, he'll be 13 next month, and definitely got tired out by the snow. Panzer, whose name suits him very well, just plowed right through it and still had plenty of energy when we were done.

52 Photos Project: Hearts

, originally uploaded by Scarlett Design.

For this weeks 52 Photos Project, I took an instagram photo of a small doily I crocheted a few weeks ago, to decorate my house for Valentines Day. I like Valentines crafting, I think because the house always feels so empty after Ive taken down the Christmas decorations, and of course all the pretty pinks and reds add some nice color in the winter.

SNOW!!!

We do occasionally get snow here in Virginia Beach, only once or twice a year, and usually only a few inches (in six years the most snow I've seen on the ground here was 6", and it shut down the city for a week). A couple weekends ago we got our first, and possibly only snowfall this winter. So I grabbed my camera and my dogs and headed down to MacKay Island NWR. The marsh looked beautiful with a dusting of snow.

A great blue heron, normally they are quite skittish, but on the drive home I realized that for some reason they weren't as scared of the car as they were of me on foot. This one let observe him from only about 25 feet way and across a frozen creek, even seeming to parade around and pose for pictures.

Changing Seasons

Recently, the City of Virginia Beach acquired a new park, Pleasure House Point, with a nature trail through a tidal marsh and some low land pine forests. Here are several photos of taken in different seasons and weather. Its amazing how dramatically the view changes.

Winter Color

Last week I took a day to myself to walk around the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. It was a cool, clear, beautiful winter day, and I had the garden mostly to myself. I really like all these ornamental kale, and I'm definitely going to use more of them in my own garden next fall.
There weren't many flowers in bloom this time of year, except the camelias and a few azaleas, but many of the hollys had brightly colored berries on them. This yellow berried holly I've never seen before.
Purple Beautyberry. I want some of these for my own yard. Not only is the berry a nice bright color, but it is also a native plant great for attracting pollinators.

52 Photos Project: All is Calm

Mallow, originally uploaded by Scarlett Design.

To photograph this week's topic, "All is Calm," I went to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens with the intention of finding something "calm" to take a picture of. I figured it would be easy, but I found myself stuck, perhaps because my brain was getting in the way, unable to find exactly what I was looking for. All the while I was enjoying having the garden mostly to myself on a remarkably still, peaceful winter day. It wasn't until I got home and began editing my photos that I found this shot, of some dormant mallow along the edge of a pond, that seemed to epitomize the feeling of walking in the calm, empty winter woods.

I really am in love with this photo, even if it was more of a challenge than I expected. It is easy to take a pretty picture of flowers in the summer, but for some reason I am more drawn to the desolate beauty of winter.

Christmas Snowflakes

My creation, originally uploaded by Scarlett Design.

Each Christmas I make about 30 snowflakes for friends and family.
The tradition started with my grandmother, who used to make beautiful crocheted snowflakes, but is now unable to, due to arthritis in her hands. When I began crocheting everyone immediately asked for snowflakes. So now I make them every year.
