Lazy Animals

Last week I went to the Virginia Living Museum. Its a small science museum, mainly focusing on animals native to Virginia. There are several aquariums, and a short boardwalk trail that goes through some nice gardens using native plants and a small zoo, with all animals that were unable to survive on their own. Most of the animals were sleeping, but still really cute.

A great blue heron, not part of the museum, just wading in the shallow waters of a neighboring pond..

Red Wolves. These were my favorite animals here. I love how they curl up into little balls, just like my Chewbacca does.

End of Summer

I have to say, I'm kind of glad summer is over here. The weather has cooled down some, still some nice beach days but not so hot it is uncomfortable. The tourists have mostly left. And, after 4 years of living at the beach, my boyfriend finally got a bike last weekend. Fall camping. Fall gardening, by august the garden was looking quite straggly. Although Irene didn't do much damage, she definitely put a few struggling plants out of their misery. I seem to get better harvests in the Spring and Fall.

Woodcut print of Atasuma Gorge. I love this, its the September page of my calendar, and I've been looking forward to it since January.

Kiptopeke State Park. One of our favorite places to walk on weekends. Labor Day was the first time we've been there since the spring, and we can look forward to our weekend walking/hiking trips and picnics again now that it isnt too hot for the dogs middday.

First tomatoes of the summer! In early July. Soon I can look forward to fresh lettuce, broccoli, and collards.

Pretty Mai Tai for my birthday. In case you are wondering, Yes, the fancy straw did make it taste better.

Chihuly at the St. Louis Botanical Garden

One of my favorite current artists is Dale Chihuly. His work is bright and cheerful, fun colors, interesting shapes, and textures.
I had planned to go see his exhibit at the MFA in Boston, but had to cancel that trip. Fortunately, I was able to see several sculptures earlier this summer while in Missouri. They fit so well into the landscape.

Daylilies at the Missouri Botanical Garden

One of the things that has kept me so busy this spring and summer is travel. Mostly short trips, accompanying my boyfriend on some business trips, a friends retirement from the military, and a family wedding. So not a "real" vacation. But I of course managed to get some fun in for myself. One of the fun things I got to do was vist the Missouri Botanical Garden, which was beautiful. And I was fortunate that the daylilies were in bloom. I've recently become obsessed with daylilies. They are so dramatic and come in so many beautiful colors. I'll definitely have to plant some bulbs this fall.

Amococo

Amococo is a big inflatable installation/sculpture that is meant to be walked around inside, It was part of the Boardwalk Art Show here in June (and I'm just blogging it now in August). Obviously I liked it because it was fun and colorful, and it was accessible and non-intimidating, so its good for kids and others who haven't had much exposure to the arts.

This one was inspired by the movie, Red Riding Hood, because I gave myself an afternoon off to go see it earlier this week. It was a very pretty movie, and an interesting story, I didn't guess who the wolf was. It actually made me interested in seeing Twilight.

Egrets

I finally finished this illustration, inspired by egrets and other wading birds I saw on the beaches in Naples, FL. I've been working on it for almost a year, and had put it aside when I had artists block.

One of the best bits of advice I got in art school, step away from your art, think about it for a few days, look at it from different distances. I have this printout on the wall, to live with it for a few days. As you can see i've made some editing notes on it.

Loons Illustration

The haunting cry of two loons echos over a still mountain lake.

This is an illustration I've been working on over the last week, of a pair of loons. I love the graphic black and white of these birds, and the red eye is a nice pop of color.
I'm not sure if this is finished yet, I'm thinking of experimenting with the color of the sky, or maybe adding a mountain ridge in the background. What do you think?

Crocheted Nests

I found the most inspiring book last week, "76 Bugs, Butterflies, and Little Beasts to Knit and Crochet" by Lesley Stanfield. I really love how she used unexpected fibers, like raffia and sparkly yarns.

As you know I've been enjoying creating my own critters lately, my nudibranch and my urchin. I wasn't sure what I was going to make next though.
I made my own nest with hemp. When I was done crocheting my bowl, it looked more like a messy bowl than a nest, so I wove some long pieces of hemp around the outside of the nest, and intentionally left the ends sticking out, like little twigs.

Key West

Thats right, I still have photos from my Florida trip in February that I haven't blogged, or added to Flickr or Facebook. Actually being only a month behind in getting to these isn't too bad for me.

Sprouts!

Have you tried growing sprouts? Its really easy and much cheaper than store bought sprouts. Its also great way to grow some vegetables in a small amount of space, or in the winter, when outdoor gardening becomes more difficult. You can add them to salads, stirfries, and sandwiches, and they are a good source of vitamins.

To grow sprouts you will need sprouting seed, a mesh screen, and a mason jar with a lid. Sprouting seed are different than seeds needed for full sized plants, so you may have a hard time finding them. I got mine at the local hippy store, as well as a mason jar sized screen to use in place of the lid. There are several websites you can by sprouting seeds from too.

First, place 2-4 tablespoons of seeds in your mason jar, and cover with twice as much water. Leave them to sit over night. Drain in the morning.
Twice a day, rinse the seeds with water, and drain.
Your seeds should start to sprout in a few days, and should have grown enough to be edible within a week.

There have been some issues with sprouts getting moldy, or carrying salmonella. That was with large corporations, and not something that I worry about with my home grown sprouts. My advice would be to only grow a small amount of sprouts at a time, and to refrigerate them once they are done growing. If you are really concerned about this you can buy more complicated (and expensive) growing systems, made up of a series of mesh trays.

Bahia Honda State Park

One of the places we loved in the FL Keys was Bahia Honda State Park.
Sunset really is beautiful every night in the Keys. Here the sun is setting over Bahia Honda State Park, and the remains of an old railroad bridge in the background.
